How this was made
Every map is built with popgrid, an open source Python package. Land maps rasterise each region's real territory into equal blocks. Population maps deform the regions with a contiguous cartogram so each one ends up with exactly its share of blocks, while keeping real borders and separate islands apart.
Boundaries come from Natural Earth admin-1. Population comes from national statistics offices. GDP (PPP, 2024) comes from the Kummu et al. gridded GDP dataset; where a country reports no regional GDP, its regional split is a model estimate and the map says so. Colours are fixed per region, so you can follow one region as it grows or shrinks.
